Cookery book author and Great British Bake Off runner-up of 2013, Ruby Tandoh, is doing something totally different in recent months. Apart from being a food columnist for The Guardian, Ruby and her partner Leah Pritchard have been busy writing a zine - 'Do What You Want' all about mental health and self-care along with a heap load of advice and support.
Their creative project is all about information on various mental health issues and articles from many contributors who have had experienced issues with their mental health and care to share their stories. As deeply, personal and inspiring the journeys are from all walks of life, we delve deeper into managing our mental health and the the recovering processes. Not only does 'Do What You Want' zine offer professional advice or medical support, it also strives in telling you stories from brave sufferers from various experiences including: eating disorders, anxiety and depression, as well as collating stories from a wide range of contributors, including Sara Quin, Tajal Rao, Mara Wilson, Bridget Minamore and Ruby Snapes.
What inspired you to create this zine?
All of the articles cover a huge variety of perspectives and topics, from ‘Why Should I Go to Therapy?’ by Heather Havrilesky to ‘On The Realities of Being a Black Woman With Borderline Personality Disorder’ by Christine Pungong.
The content inside the zine includes a personal essay about mental wellbeing as a Somali refugee woman; an article about seeking treatment as a non-binary person; a look at being mentally ill and on benefits; a portrait of social anxiety; a comic about mental health and compulsive spending and a collection of favourite recipes for taking care of yourself.
Not only is the zine all about mental health, there is also a very insightful piece by Martha Rose Saunders on what it's like to be autistic and looks at how the pressure to ‘pass’ as non-autistic impacts her mental health, as well as how she finds peace in the depths of the ocean.
